Obituary of Joseph Everett Merrithew
Joseph Everett Merrithew passed away on October 1, 2018 at Whatcom Hospice House. He grew up in S. Portland Maine. At 18 he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Joe served six years of active duty and was honorably discharged in 1954. During his time in the Air Force, he moved to the west coast where he met and married Shirley, his wife of 65 years. Joe and Shirley have resided in Bellingham since 1956. Joe was employed at Georgia Pacific paper division where he retired after 32 years. Joe was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a member of the American Legion Post 7 and also a member of the Bell Air Remote Control Flyers Club. He built many of the remote control planes he flew. He sang Barbershop with the Bellingham Chorus and numerous quartets as a Baritone. Joe participated in many international competitions, but his highlight was performing in the Music Man production at Western Washington University in the early 90’s. Joe is survived by his wife Shirley, daughters; Pam Montague of Olympia and Jody Pelo of Bellingham. Joe was an amazing grandfather to his four grandchildren-Jennifer (Travis) Meyer, Brian (Shanne) Montague, Matthew Pelo and Scott Pelo. Joe will be laid to rest at Greenacres Memorial Park. At his humble request, there will not be a service. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Whatcom Hospice House.
