Lieutenant Commander Gerald "Jerry" Sylvanus French (born Kiley), 71, passed away unexpectedly outside his home in Ferndale, WA on Monday, October 30, 2017.
Jerry was born in Eugene, Oregon to Edith Dorabelle Hunt and Albert Kiley on February 1, 1946 and was later adopted by his step-father, Mack Sterling French. He grew up in various cities in British Columbia, Montana and Chemult, Oregon where he graduated from Gilchrist High School before joining the US Navy in 1964. He met his future wife, Jacqueline Argo, while on leave from ship in Sacramento in 1966.The two of them married and had three children.
While in the Navy, he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Idaho (Class of '73). He received his Masters Degree from National University.
Jerry proudly served in the Navy for 21 years, aboard the USS Enterprise (66-69), USS Mispillion (73-74), USS Wichita (74-77), Navy Weapons Station, Concord, CA (77-79), USS Leahy (79-82), and at the Combat Systems Technical Schools Command, Mare Island, CA (82-85). Jerry was an avid reader who loved to build things. He had a sweet tooth and enjoyed cooking - especially breakfast for his family on Christmas morning. He moved to Washington with his wife earlier this year and was looking forward to fishing.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jacqueline French; his daughters Catherine Johnson and Cynthia French; his son Timothy French; and his granddaughter Morgan Grace French.
To honor his wishes, LCDR French will be cremated and his ashes returned to the sea in a Naval ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to The Retired Officers Association.
